What the NFL’s Biggest Jet Lag Experiment Can Teach Us About Circadian Rhythm

The NFL’s first regular-season game in Australia created one of the most interesting real-world sleep and performance experiments professional sports has seen.

The Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers traveled nearly 8,000 miles from California to Melbourne to play at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where more than 100,000 fans watched San Francisco win 27-7.

The football itself generated plenty of storylines.

The sleep science may end up being more useful for the rest of us.

The two teams faced the same opponent, the same stadium, the same 10:35 a.m. local kickoff, and essentially the same enormous time-zone problem.

They chose almost opposite ways to solve it.

San Francisco arrived about a week before the game and began living on Melbourne time. The players slept there, practiced there, ate there, and gave their bodies several days to start adjusting to the local environment.

Los Angeles compressed almost the entire trip into less than 72 hours. The Rams arrived roughly 28 hours before kickoff and planned to fly home shortly after the game. Their goal was to preserve something close to Pacific time rather than asking players to fully adapt to Australia and then readjust immediately when they returned home. [1]

It was a fascinating bet on human biology.

And for anyone who travels for work, competes in early races, crosses time zones, or simply has to perform at a time when their body would rather be doing something else, there is a lot to learn from it.

The Rams and 49ers Were Solving Different Problems

At first glance, San Francisco’s strategy seems more intuitive.

Travel early, get over the jet lag, and be adjusted by game day.

That approach is also closer to what sports-science consensus generally recommends when athletes have enough time available. Jet lag results from a mismatch between the body’s internal circadian clock and the schedule of the new location. Giving that clock time to re-entrain can improve sleep, alertness, digestion, mood, and readiness to perform. [2]

The Rams were solving a slightly different problem.

Melbourne was 17 hours ahead of California on the local clock. A 10:35 a.m. Friday kickoff in Melbourne occurred at 5:35 p.m. Thursday in Los Angeles.

That mattered because late afternoon and early evening are often strong performance periods for athletes. Strength, power, coordination, body temperature, and several other physiological systems follow circadian patterns, with many physical-performance measures tending to peak later in the day. [3]

The Rams therefore had a reasonable physiological argument.

If the players could keep their body clocks close to California time, kickoff would effectively feel like an early-evening game.

Sleep specialist Dr. Chris Winter summarized the thinking before the game: the Rams were effectively asking their players to continue being athletically ready around 6 p.m., even if the sun outside suddenly looked completely wrong. [4]

There was real logic behind that strategy.

The risk was everything surrounding the favorable kickoff time.

Jet Lag and Travel Fatigue Are Different

One of the easiest mistakes when discussing long-distance travel is treating every unpleasant symptom as jet lag.

Sports scientists separate two related problems.

Travel fatigue comes from the trip itself. Long flights, disrupted sleep, sitting for hours, dehydration, unusual meals, airport schedules, stress, and general exhaustion can affect someone even if they never cross a time zone.

Jet lag comes from circadian misalignment. Your brain and body are operating on one schedule while the light-dark cycle, meals, social activity, and clock at your destination are operating on another.

The Rams were trying to avoid major circadian adjustment.

They could not avoid travel fatigue.

Their itinerary included nearly 16 hours in the air each way, a crossing of the international date line, and more than 31 total hours on planes during a trip lasting less than three days. [1]

Sleep physician Dr. Meeta Singh identified this as the major weakness in the strategy before kickoff. Even if the game occurred at a favorable biological time, the players still needed enough actual sleep during the trip to arrive ready to perform. [4]

That distinction applies well beyond professional sports.

You can manipulate your body clock intelligently and still feel terrible after an overnight flight because you barely slept, ate strangely, sat for 12 hours, and arrived dehydrated.

Circadian timing is powerful, but it is only one piece of travel recovery.

Your Body Performs on a Schedule

The Rams’ strategy makes more sense once you understand that athletic performance changes across the day.

Circadian rhythms regulate far more than sleepiness.

Core body temperature, hormone secretion, cardiovascular function, reaction time, alertness, digestion, coordination, and several aspects of physical performance fluctuate across roughly 24-hour cycles. [5]

For many forms of athletic performance, the late afternoon and early evening tend to be favorable. A recent review of athlete travel noted that muscle strength, coordination, and mental acuity often peak during this period, although the ideal time varies by sport, individual chronotype, environment, and the type of performance being measured. [6]

This is why an athlete can feel completely different doing the same workout at 6 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Their fitness has not dramatically changed during those eleven hours.

Their biological context has.

The implications extend well beyond sports.

Mental alertness, reaction time, concentration, appetite, sleepiness, and mood also have daily rhythms. Traveling across time zones can put the local schedule in direct conflict with those internal rhythms.

You may be sitting in a conference room at 9 a.m. in London while your brain still thinks it is 3 a.m.

The clock on the wall does not immediately reset the clock in your brain.

Light Is the Most Powerful Reset Signal

The body uses several cues to determine what time it is.

The most important is light.

Exposure to light at the right time can shift the circadian clock earlier or later. Exposure at the wrong time can push it in the opposite direction and make adaptation harder. This is why modern jet-lag planning involves much more than choosing a bedtime. [2]

Meals matter.

Exercise timing matters.

Sleep timing matters.

Social activity matters.

Melatonin can sometimes be useful when timed correctly.

But light is the strongest environmental signal the circadian system receives.

This is also why jet lag cannot be solved simply by getting into bed at the destination’s normal bedtime.

You can lie down at 10 p.m. Melbourne time because the schedule says you should. Your brain may still be operating on California time and producing alertness signals appropriate for a completely different part of the day.

Repeated exposure to the new light-dark cycle gradually teaches the body where it is.

San Francisco gave itself a week of those signals.

Los Angeles intentionally tried to minimize them.

How Fast Can You Actually Adjust to a New Time Zone?

People often hear the rule that jet lag takes about one day per time zone crossed.

That is a useful rule of thumb, but human circadian adaptation is more complicated.

A 2026 review of long-haul travel in athletes notes that re-entrainment often occurs at roughly one hour per day, while direction matters considerably. The human circadian clock naturally tends to run slightly longer than 24 hours, which generally makes delaying the clock easier than advancing it. [6]

That is why eastward travel often feels particularly difficult. Going east usually requires your body to fall asleep and wake earlier than it wants to.

Westward travel generally asks the body to delay.

Even then, the number of time zones, timing of light exposure, individual chronotype, sleep history, travel schedule, and competition time can all change the experience.

There is another wrinkle in a California-to-Melbourne trip.

Melbourne was 17 hours ahead on the local clock, but a 24-hour clock is circular. Biologically, adaptation does not necessarily mean marching the internal clock forward through all 17 hours. Depending on the desired schedule and timing cues, the circadian system can effectively move in the opposite direction.

That is part of what made the Rams’ approach so interesting.

They were not trying to solve Melbourne.

They were trying to make Melbourne temporarily behave like California.

The Result Was Dramatic, but It Was Not a Controlled Experiment

San Francisco won 27-7.

The 49ers led 10-7 at halftime and then pulled away, holding Los Angeles scoreless for the entire second half. Matthew Stafford finished 15-of-25 for 155 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy threw three touchdowns. [7]

The contrast made the travel strategies impossible to ignore.

Still, it would be bad science to conclude that the 49ers won because they arrived early.

Football games have too many variables.

Scheme, execution, turnovers, injuries, coaching, individual matchups, conditioning, preparation, and simple randomness all matter. Rams coach Sean McVay rejected the idea that the late arrival explained the loss and said San Francisco had simply outplayed his team. [7]

That is the appropriate caution.

The game cannot tell us that arriving one week early is always superior.

What it does show is that travel strategy did not exist on the margins of preparation. Both teams considered sleep and circadian timing important enough to build radically different plans around them.

The Rams even sent representatives to Australia during the offseason to experience the trip and evaluate the effects of travel before committing to their schedule. [8]

Professional teams scout opponents.

In this case, Los Angeles also scouted jet lag.

Why the 49ers Approach Fits the Conventional Science

For a traveler who needs to function normally at a destination for more than a very short period, the 49ers’ strategy generally resembles the safer approach.

Arrive early enough to adapt.

Start sleeping on local time.

Get light at the appropriate times.

Move meals and exercise toward the destination schedule.

Allow several days for the body clock to catch up.

The athlete consensus statement on travel fatigue and jet lag recommends maximizing the rate of circadian adaptation after arrival, particularly through planned light exposure and avoidance. The authors also recommend protecting sleep, strategically timing exercise and meals, and considering carefully timed melatonin in appropriate situations. [2]

The Rams’ approach was more specialized.

Their trip was extraordinarily short. Their kickoff happened to align favorably with California biological time. They also wanted to avoid returning home after spending a full week shifting toward Melbourne time.

That combination created a legitimate reason to consider staying on home time.

Most travelers will not have those same conditions.

If you are spending a week in Europe, you probably do not want to spend the entire trip eating breakfast at 2 p.m. and trying to avoid daylight.

What This Means for an Early Race

You do not need a flight to Australia to experience circadian misalignment.

An early race start can create a smaller version of the same problem.

Imagine you normally wake at 7 a.m., but your race requires a 4:30 a.m. alarm.

You can simply set the alarm earlier on race morning and hope adrenaline handles the rest.

Or you can start moving the clock beforehand.

Shift wake time 15 to 30 minutes earlier.

Move bedtime earlier.

Get morning light earlier.

Move breakfast and exercise timing earlier.

Repeat the process for several days.

That gives your circadian system repeated cues about the schedule you will eventually ask it to follow.

The change is much smaller than traveling to Melbourne, but the biology is the same.

Consistency applied over several days usually has more influence than one heroic attempt to fall asleep at 7:30 p.m. the night before the race.

What This Means for Business Travel

Business travelers make a similar mistake.

They optimize the flight and ignore the meeting.

If you land in Europe on Monday and have the biggest presentation of the year at 8 a.m. Tuesday, the question should begin several days earlier.

What time will that meeting occur according to your current body clock?

When do you need to be alert?

Can you start shifting sleep and wake times before departure?

What light exposure will help after arrival?

Can you arrive a day earlier?

Can the most cognitively demanding work be scheduled later in the local day?

Those questions can sound excessive until you remember what jet lag actually affects.

Concentration, alertness, mood, reaction time, sleep, gastrointestinal function, and cognitive performance can all be disrupted after long-haul travel. [2][6]

If the event matters enough to cross an ocean for, timing your body for it probably deserves some consideration too.

A Practical Jet Lag Plan

There is no universal travel schedule because the right strategy depends on direction, number of time zones, length of stay, chronotype, and the time when you need to perform.

Still, a few principles are broadly useful.

Start adjusting before you leave

For a meaningful time shift, begin moving sleep and wake times gradually several days before departure.

Fifteen to 30 minutes per day is often much easier to tolerate than trying to move several hours at once.

Earlier destination schedule? Start moving earlier.

Later destination schedule? Start moving later.

The goal is to reduce the gap your body has to close after arrival.

Treat wake time as an anchor

Bedtime gets most of the attention, but wake time is usually easier to control.

A consistent wake time establishes when light exposure, activity, meals, and sleep pressure begin for the day.

If you are intentionally shifting your schedule, move the morning along with the evening.

Use light strategically

Morning light generally helps shift the clock earlier.

Evening light generally helps shift it later.

That is a simplified version because the exact effect depends on where you are in your circadian cycle, particularly after large time-zone jumps. For complex trips, a jet-lag calculator or professional guidance can be useful because poorly timed light can slow adaptation rather than speed it. [2]

Move meals and exercise too

Your body clock responds to more than sleep.

Meal timing, exercise, and social activity also reinforce the schedule.

If you are trying to become a morning person for an early event while continuing to eat dinner, exercise, and stay under bright light late at night, you are giving the body contradictory cues.

Move the entire routine gradually.

Protect actual sleep

Circadian strategy cannot compensate for severe sleep deprivation.

The Rams could theoretically preserve a favorable biological performance window, but they still needed to sleep during an exceptionally long trip.

Banking sleep before travel, protecting sleep during transit, limiting unnecessary late nights, and creating a good sleep environment after arrival still matter.

Give important events extra time

If a race, presentation, competition, or meeting really matters, build some margin into the trip.

Arriving early costs money and time.

Arriving physiologically unprepared has a cost too.

The Bigger Lesson From Melbourne

The most interesting part of Rams versus 49ers had little to do with which travel strategy was ultimately declared correct.

It was the seriousness with which both organizations treated circadian rhythm.

One team spent a week trying to reset it.

The other built an entire travel plan around avoiding that reset.

Both were acknowledging the same reality: the body has its own clock, and performance depends partly on what that clock thinks you should be doing.

That applies on a much smaller scale every day.

The 5 a.m. race start.

The overnight flight.

The presentation after crossing six time zones.

The first morning back from vacation.

The Monday alarm after sleeping until 10 on Sunday.

Your body responds to repeated timing cues from sleep, light, movement, meals, and routine. Convenience does not immediately override those signals.

If you know you need to perform at an unusual time, give your body some notice.

Move the schedule gradually.

Use morning or evening light intentionally.

Protect the sleep you can get.

Let consistency do some of the work before the important moment arrives.

Professional athletes have teams of specialists and enormous travel budgets, but the basic biology they are trying to manage is the same biology the rest of us live with every day.

Set your internal clock before you ask your body to perform on it.
