Sleep and Fitness News - May 9th, 2024

Hey packlings 👋

Could Equinox’s New $40,00 membership really help you live longer?  And what can you do if you’re looking to stop doom-scrolling in bed at night?  There’s plenty of juicy news to unpack in this week’s edition of the Sleep & Fitness News, so let’s get into it.

💲Could Equinox’s New $40,000 Membership Really Help You Live Longer?

On Monday, the high-end gym chain Equinox introduced a longevity program  called “Optimize” with a $40,000 annual membership fee.  The program is “designed to unlock the peaks of human potential” through personalized nutrition, sleep and fitness coaching based on members’ unique biodata.  The program is being run in partnership with the lab test startup Function Health, which was co-founded by Dr. Mark Hyman, and aim is to help people “live 100 healthy years.” What do you get for this incredibly premium fee?  Regular blood tests, a gym membership, an Oura ring, and 16 hours a month of 1 on 1 training… including with a sleep coach and nutritionist.  While this program is out of reach for most of us - it’s an alluring offer for the ultra wealthy.

📱How to Stop the Doom-Scrolling In Bed

Over half of Americans spend time on their phones within an hour of going to sleep, according to a survey by the National Sleep Foundation.  Even people who know that looking at their smartphone in bed isn’t good for them do it anyway.  So why do we do this to ourselves?  “The brain needs to wind down long before bedtime to get the restorative deep sleep that helps the body function,” said Melissa Milanak, an associate professor at the University of South Carolina specializing in sleep health. “You wouldn’t take a casserole out of the oven and stick it right in the fridge. It needs to cool down,” Milanak said. “Our brains need to do that too.” If you’re looking to go cold turkey, you can try sequestering your phone in another room.  If you’re looking to wean off screen time at night - there are ways to reduce the harm. Try setting the phone on night mode at a scheduled time every day to reduce screen brightness, and eliminate or hide tempting but stress-inducing and overly stimulating notifications or apps.

🏀 It’s NBA Playoff Time - How Wins & Losses Change with Time Zones

A new study analyzing data across 21 NBA seasons found a vastly better win ratio for home teams from the western time zone when playing an eastern time zone team, compared to vice versa. Researchers found teams perform better when their circadian rhythms are ahead of local time, especially when returning westward.  Specifically, when west coast teams played at home against east teams their winning percentage was 63.5%, but when east coast teams hosted a west coast team, their winning percentage dropped to 55.0%.  The day becomes longer traveling east to west, making the natural circadian rhythm slightly longer than 24 hours - putting the east coast teams at a greater disadvantage.  The advice from this study was for NBA teams to consider circadian rhythms in their travel and game preparation strategies to optimize player performance and chances of winning.
